You won’t find him at a morning bus stop or walking school hallways—but Henry Hague, Insight PA’s School Safety Coordinator, is always on the move. Serving students in grades K–12 across Pennsylvania, Insight PA is a public cyber charter school, and keeping that large and diverse school community safe, both online and in person, is no small task.

Mr. Hague’s day might start with reviewing emergency plans, shift into collaborating with tech teams on panic alert systems, and end with mapping out de-escalation training for digital conversations. It’s safety work reimagined for the digital age—and no two days look alike.

“As the School Safety Coordinator, I go where I’m needed,” he explains. “Whether it’s student behavior, threat assessments, or creating new safety protocols, my role is all about helping the school community stay secure and supported.”

Even with students learning from home, in-person events like state testing and field trips bring their own safety needs. That’s why this year, Insight PA rolled out site-specific emergency response plans, complete with safety evaluations and new wearable panic alerts. These alerts—currently being piloted—are designed to ensure rapid response from local authorities and are among the first of their kind in a cyber school environment.

But safety isn’t just about emergencies—it’s also about prevention and communication. After staff members voiced a need for more tools to navigate tense moments, Mr. Hague partnered with JKM Training to build a de-escalation training program customized for both in-person and virtual interactions.

“It became clear that one-size-fits-all training wasn’t going to cut it,” he says. “We’re creating something meaningful that supports everyone—whether they’re dealing with a face-to-face conflict or a tough phone call.”

Insight PA’s threat assessment team is another layer of support. By collaborating with our teachers, counselors, school psychologists, and outside agencies, the team takes a proactive, team-based approach to student and staff safety. It’s not just about identifying risks—it’s about ensuring every learner feels supported.

Staff members also have access to a non-emergency reporting portal, where they can flag anything from a tripping hazard at a testing site to a safety protocol that needs improvement. It’s just one more way Insight PA ensures that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

When it comes to families, Mr. Hague has one key piece of advice:

“Stay involved. Know what your kids are doing online—what they’re texting, what chat rooms they’re in, what they’re sharing and seeing on social media. Parental awareness is one of the best ways to keep kids safe.”

When he’s not designing emergency plans or responding to safety reports, Mr. Hague spends his time exercising, reading, and heading to the beach with his family—because, as he puts it, “Health is the most important thing in anybody’s life.”

At Insight PA, school safety doesn’t stop at the virtual door. From thoughtful planning to innovative tools and responsive support, we’re building a school community where every student and staff member feels safe and seen—wherever learning occurs.
